Why wear an ileostomy pouch?
Colostomy
Ileostomy
Urostomy
After an ostomy operation, faeces will pass out through the stoma instead of the anus. Unlike the anus, the stoma has no muscle to control the release of faeces or wind. That is why you need to wear an ostomy pouch, so that you know all waste is collected securely.
Just after the operation, you might find that your faeces smell stronger and are looser than you are used to. This will change once your body has adjusted to the stoma. Just as before your operation, the consistency of your faeces will depend on your diet.

There are several different types of ileostomy pouches
. Your specialist stoma nurse will show you which one is right for you.
