Treatments - Spina Bifida

Tip Print Share
Treatment for spina bifida depends on the type of spina bifida and its severity. Generally, children with the mild form need no treatment, although some may require surgery as they grow.

Surgery
In most children with the more severe forms of spina bifida, the first course of action is to surgically close the defect in the spine. Although this cannot repair lost or damaged nerve tissue or restore any loss of function, it can reduce the risk of infection and associated complications, and limit any further damage to the spine. This surgery normally takes place within the first few days of life. It can also be performed before the baby is born – this may have better results, but is still considered to be experimental.

Treating related conditions
Additional treatment may be needed for related conditions such as hip dislocations, clubfeet, or curvature of the spine. When water on the brain is present, drainage tubes (called shunts) can prevent brain damage and have been shown to improve memory, coordination and other cognitive functions. Because shunts can easily become infected, multiple operations are often necessary during the person’s life.
